Using a blow-dryer on your hair requires a common-sense approach to accomplish the style and texture desired without damaging hair in the process. Blow-dryers with multiple heat settings and a cold setting as well provide the variance needed to protect and lock a style into place. Moderation in both use and duration of the drying process are as important, as is technique. Whether curly, wavy or straight, great-looking hair can be the crowning achievement that completes your look.
Step 1
Shampoo your hair and after rinsing, apply a conditioner, allowing it to be absorbed for approximately four minutes.
Step 2
Rinse the conditioner out and wrap your hair in a towel for four minutes to absorb dripping water.
Step 3
Remove the towel and comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb, being careful not to snag on any tangles.
Step 4
Apply a heat-protecting product to your hair to seal the conditioner's moisture into each hair follicle.
Step 5
Use a styling product designed for your type of hair: straight, curly or wavy. These products include gel, mousse or sprays, and their application to the hair should be liberal and even.
Step 6
Blow-dry the hair by using a multi-setting blower set on low heat to begin the process. The thickest part of the hair requires the most time and needs attention first. The next priorities should be any areas in which natural drying causes incorrect laying, creasing or curling to occur. Troublesome areas such as these need immediate attention.
Step 7
Use a boar's bristle brush--which is the best type brush to avoid damaging wet hair strands--in conjunction with the blow-dryer to style the hair. A paddle brush that is wide will work best for a straight look, whereas a round bristle brush works best for curls and waves.
Step 8
Section off your hair by using non-creasing clips and tissue paper to protect one section as you blow-dry the next. Re-moisten hair sections if they become too dry during the process due to excessive heat from nearby sections. Over-drying will cause frizziness and split ends.
Step 9
Use the hot setting on each section to open the hair follicle, then while it is warmed and ready to shape, use your brush to achieve it. Always finish each section with a cold blast of air to seal the follicle and set that section's style in place.
Step 10
Hold the blow-dryer above the hair and blow downward rather than bending over and flipping hair up to dry. Blow-drying should begin at the roots and work up to the ends of each hair. Continue this procedure until all hair sections are dry and holding the desired style.
