While not all acne lesions cause scars, those that do are typically severe. That's why it's important to seek treatment from a dermatologist if your acne doesn't clear up with over-the-counter medications after six to eight weeks. However, should you develop acne scars anyway, they can appear as deep punctures, shallow waves or even red, brown or black spots. To get rid of black acne scars, be consistent in your application of the chosen treatment to see results.
Step 1
Treat acne before treating scars. If you still have new blemishes appearing, see a dermatologist to get the appropriate treatment for your acne and your skin type. A cream that's stronger than what's available over-the-counter or an oral medication will likely be prescribed.
Step 2
Apply a topical retinoid cream to your black acne scars. Over-the-counter versions are available such as retinol, but the stronger retinoid cream is available by prescription only, often as the brand Retin-A. Use a small amount of this cream and apply it to your black acne scars once a day to encourage them to fade faster.
Step 3
Use a skin lightening cream on your black acne scars. These are available over-the-counter and generally shouldn't be used by those with darker skin tones, as they tend to permanently remove pigment. No more than a 2 percent solution of hydroquinone should be used on black acne scars to prevent skin damage.
Step 4
Moisturize your skin daily with an oil-free cream or lotion. Apply a decent amount all over your face, concentrating on areas that flake or dry out. This is especially important when using scar fading creams like Retin-A, since they tend to dry out the skin and cause irritation.
Step 5
Use a sunscreen every day. An SPF 30 formula is best, according to AcneNet, and will ensure your skin doesn't incur too much sun exposure when you go outside. Many skin lighteners and scar creams make the skin photosensitive, meaning it takes less sun exposure for it to burn. Likewise, black acne scars may darken if exposed to the sun. Apply the sunscreen 20 minutes prior to leaving your home for the best results.
