Hair normally grows about 1/2 inch per month but breakage and hair loss can sabotage healthy hair. Many vitamins and herbs aid in the manufacture of keratin, the protein in hair. Vitamins and herbs, whether taken internally or applied topically, may promote hair growth by improving scalp circulation at the dermis, where hair follicles grow. They can also increase production of sebum, natural oil that lubricates your hair. Many herbs have been known for their cleansing, toning and moisturizing properties for centuries.

Vitamins from Natural and Supplemental Sources

Vitamins A, E and C are antioxidants that help maintain capillaries that carry blood to actively growing cells in the hair bulb, the emerging point of the hair follicle. Vitamin E may stimulate hair growth by fortifying your immune system. Vitamin A helps maintain natural oils in the scalp, but use with caution as excessive amounts can trigger hair loss. The B-complex group of vitamins supplies the metabolic requirement of hair follicles for optimum growth; niacin improves scalp circulation; Pantothenic Acid prevents hair loss; biotin produces keratin. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center web site, supplements may improve thin and damaged hair and nails, hence promote hair growth.

Herbal Teas

Stinging nettle, taken as a tea, acts as a blood purifier and blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT, a natural metabolite that is the main reason for hair loss. Aloe, Arnica, Catmint and Chamomile teas help cleanse the blood and skin for hair growth. Burdock and marshmallow tea increase circulation and blood supply to the scalp.

Herbal Conditioner

For a growth-promoting oil treatment, combine six drops of rosemary, lavender and sage oil into 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for a natural conditioner to the scalp and hair shafts. Rosemary oil strengthens and stimulates hair follicles and helps fight dandruff, a major cause of premature baldness. Lavender controls the production of sebaceous gland oil and reduces flaky scalp conditions. Sage has antioxidant properties and is antibacterial. Coconut oil helps protect the internal and external root sheaths covering the hair follicles and keeps the scalp moisturized.

Herbs in Shampoo

Horsetail, mixed in your shampoo, may speed up hair growth because of silica, which helps make hair stronger from the cortex. Burdock Root Oil added to shampoo, or applied directly to the scalp, can help detoxify substances that cause hair loss. Henna, an ingredient in hair dye, is an herb that stimulates healthy hair growth. Birch Oil is an herb often recommended to prevent thinning hair. Saw Palmetto, an extract from palm trees, is used to regulate hormones for prostate treatment and is the primary active ingredient in most natural hair loss remedies.

Considerations

Hair needs a balanced, nutritious diet to stay healthy. Eating fruits and vegetables loaded with antioxidant vitamins is essential to maintain healthy beautiful hair. However, excessive amounts of vitamin and herbal supplements can produce adverse effects and topical herbal treatments can cause allergic reactions. Consult your doctor if you notice unfavorable changes after using supplements. If you have been experiencing hair thinning, consider visiting a dermatologist.
