What To Look For

Snowshoeing can get a child outside during the winter. Kids snowshoes range from the toy variety----often available near the sleds in discount stores---to snowshoes that are as high end as anything available for adults. Snowshoes should be purchased in accordance with the height and weight of the person wearing them, so be sure that the snowshoes you buy are the right size for your child. The snowshoe should equal in square inches your child's weight in pounds. Consider the terrain where you'll be snowshoeing. A basic snowshoe without crampons and other accessories will work fine on flat, groomed trails. However, icy trails, deep snow or unfamiliar changing terrain require a more rugged snowshoe. The best showshoes for kids have an aluminum-framed snowshoe that offers toe claws. Some also have a claw, or crampon, at the heel for additional grip. You may want to purchase poles to help your child balance better, especially on rougher trails.

Common Pitfalls

The biggest mistake people make when buying kid's snowshoes is purchasing an inexpensive pair or even a toy pair so that they can gauge a child's interest in the sport. Unfortunately, these types of snowshoes are often uncomfortable, don't fit well and can deter a child from wanting to go out in snowshoes. Check the bindings on the snowshoes. Have your child wear her snowboots and then try on the snowshoes. The snowshoe binding should be flexible enough for her to move around in but secure enough that you don't have to worry about it falling off.

Where To Buy

Snowshoes for kids can be purchased at sporting goods and outdoor adventure gear stores both online and off. Unless you are buying them as a present, be sure to bring your child along to try them on. Check an online store's return policy before purchasing, just in case.
