Adopting a child is a wonderful way to help needy children and to start or complete your family. There are a number of different types of child adoption programs. Each program differs in cost and affordability and some programs offer adoption outside the United States. This allows your family a choice in the child you adopt and flexibility in the cost so that low-income families are able to adopt as well.

Interstate Adoption

According to Molly Cerreta Smith with She Knows Parenting, interstate adoption is a program that allows you to adopt a child 4 years old and older from an agency outside the state that you live in. Adoption.com reports that two types of agreements control the interstate adoptions between the "sending" state and the "receiving" state. These agreements are the Interstate Compact on Adoption and Medical Assistance (ICAMA) and The Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC). Molly Cerreta Smith reports that interstate adoptions allow you to choose a child that you believe would be a good fit for your family and meet the child before they come into your home. This program is low cost and the whole process takes about six months to one year to complete.

Foster Care Adoption

According to Adoption Services, state and local public agencies conduct foster care adoptions in every one of the fifty United States. Adoption Services reports that children in these programs have become the responsibility of the state because the children are unsafe with their own parents. If you are a family wishing to provide a loving home to a child, you can apply to be foster care parents with your local agency. The children in these programs sometimes have a sad past and need extra attention from loving families. In addition, children in these programs sometimes have special physical, psychological or educational needs. However, Adoption Services reports that this particular program is an excellent way for low-income families to adopt children without an exorbitant cost. The state absorbs the cost of the adoption and the legal fees for you, as reported by Adoption Services.

International Adoption

International adoption offers families the ability to adopt a child from another country. However, these types of adoption programs can be significantly more costly. According to Adoption Services, countries such as Guatemala, Russia, China and others offer adoptions to families in the United States. Adoption Services reports that international adoption is popular for many reasons, which include long waiting lists and the rising cost of domestic adoptions. However, Adoption Services reports that international adoptions are beleaguered with a unique host of problems, which include long delays, lack of information about the biological parents, extensive traveling and problems dealing with the legal process in other countries. If you are considering an international adoption, you should do your homework and research the program that interests you.
