Natural Cures for Lowering Blood Sugar

Lowering blood sugar is important for those with hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), which can lead to a host of complications such as blurred vision, frequent infections and nerve damage. According to the Mayo Clinic, certain practices can raise blood sugar. Overeating or eating the wrong foods, lack of exercise, and physical or emotional stress are all factors that can increase blood sugar. Aside from medications, natural remedies to reduce blood sugar do exist. Talk to your doctor before taking any natural remedy.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek or fenugreek seed has been used for many years to treat health conditions such as digestive problems, menopausal symptoms and to induce childbirth, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. Today this seed is considered a natural remedy for appetite control and inflammation, and may also help stimulate milk production in women who are breastfeeding. In addition, the NCCAM notes that the seed may be effective for treating diabetes, as studies have found that fenugreek may help lower blood sugar among diabetics.

Exercise

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, exercise can be beneficial for weight loss, heart health, and diabetes control and prevention. For those with diabetes, exercise is a natural way to lower blood sugar levels while improving strength, coordination and boosting your mood. The American Diabetes Association recommends aiming for a minimum of 150 minutes weekly of moderately intense physical activity.

Ginseng

Ginseng, also known as Chinese ginseng, Asian ginseng, Korean ginseng and Asiatic ginseng, is a root that contains chemical properties that have been used for centuries for medicinal purposes. When dried, the root can be used as a tea, capsule, topical cream, extract or tablet that is believed to be useful for health, stamina and improving the mood. According to the NCCAM, the herb is a natural remedy for erectile dysfunction, menopause symptoms, hepatitis C, blood pressure management and lowering blood sugar. Research, however, is uncertain in regard to those claims.
