At an average rate of 6 inches per year, human hair grows slower than you might think. Styling, poor diet, environmental pollutants and illness can all leave the hair brittle, weak and thin, and it can slow down the growth of healthy hair. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to speed up hair growth or to make hair grow in thicker; but by lessening the amount of damage you do to your hair on a daily basis, and by using products made to thicken the hair shaft, you can improve the health and appearance of your hair and ensure that it grows as fast as possible.

Step 1

Skip a day or two between shampoos. Shampooing the hair strips it of essential oils that are produced by the hair follicle specifically to protect the hair shaft. Washing the hair too often can leave it dull, dry and weakened.

Step 2

Protect your hair from environmental pollutants and sun damage by using a shampoo specially created for that purpose. Look for a shampoo that contains marine botanicals to moisturize the hair and a UV shield to protect it from the sun.

Step 3

Limit heat styling your hair to no more than five days per week. Heat styling damages the hair shaft and makes it thinner and weaker. The less you use heat on your hair the better, so try to take at least two days off per week and find other ways to style your hair without heat.

Step 4

Condition your hair every time you shampoo and deep condition the hair once a week to seal in moisture and smooth the hair shaft.

Step 5

Use a thickening product when styling the hair to plump up the volume of the hair shaft. Styling products with a blend of polymers wrap the hair shaft and add volume at the roots.

Step 6

Eat a nutritious, high-protein diet, including meat, fish, eggs, milk, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts. Hair needs to be nourished from the inside, and eating a proper diet is the only way to do this.
