Diabetes is a disease characterized by high blood sugar readings. When blood sugars run high, it is important to work with a physician or endocrinologist to bring them down to normal levels. High blood sugars can lead to a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. If blood sugars are consistently high over a long period of time, they also can lead to complications of diabetes such as kidney disease, eye problems, and neuropathy or foot complications.
Step 1
Visit your doctor if your blood sugars are running high. Your doctor will take a look at your blood glucose log if you are regularly taking your own readings at home. He may also do additional blood work. Discuss with your doctor your medication regime, which may need to be changed. Your doctor should identify goals for your blood glucose levels and make changes in your medication regimen as indicated.
Step 2
Exercise regularly. Speak to your doctor about what kind of physical activity is safe for you. Depending on your medical history and your physical condition, your doctor may have specific recommendations. For most people, 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity is recommended. Taking a walk, gardening, biking or swimming is considered exercise.
Step 3
Take your medications regularly. If you are on insulin or oral medications for diabetes, consistently taking your medications at the correct time is important. Medications should be timed according to your schedule, so it is important that you discuss your daily routine with your doctor when he is considering your medication regimen.
Step 4
Eat within your dietary guidelines. When one has diabetes, it is important to work with a doctor, a dietician or a nutritionist regarding a dietary plan. Depending on height, weight, and body mass index, a certain number of calories, carbohydrates, and proteins should be recommended. Dietary suggestions for meals and snacks should be made.
Step 5
Be aware of how to treat low blood sugars. Changes in your medicine regimen, eating habits or exercise pattern can lead to low blood sugars. This can cause symptoms like shakiness, confusion, irritability, dizziness or even loss of consciousness. Low blood sugar should be treated with fifteen grams of carbohydrates. Blood sugars should be monitored a few minutes later to determine whether the blood sugar has risen to a normal level. When low blood sugar symptoms become severe, call 911 or seek emergency medical attention.
Step 6
Call your doctor if your blood sugars are running high. When you see your doctor, ask him for parameters, or when you should call him to report out of control blood sugar readings. If blood sugars are consistently running high, it could indicate that there is an underlying illness or infection that needs to be treated, or that a medication adjustment needs to be made.
