A good kick in soccer requires a combination of power and accuracy. When it comes to striking a soccer ball, harder isn't always better. When you only focus on kicking harder, you tend to tense up your muscles and lose power in your strike. By shifting your attention to proper technique, you'll be able to transfer the momentum from your entire body into your kick.

Step 1

Approach the ball with your knee leading your foot. Form a V shape with your kicking leg, so your foot whips out at the last second to strike the ball. Focus on keeping your body loose as you move toward the ball.

Step 2

Make contact with the ball with the laces of your cleat when you kick. Kick through the knuckle of your big toe to put the most force into the shot. Watch your foot as it strikes the ball to prevent shifting your weight back, therefore losing power.

Step 3

Follow through with your foot, driving the ball toward your target. Keep your knee and ankle moving in a straight line toward the target, even after you've made contact with the ball. The momentum of a powerful kick should cause your body to move forward an additional step or two after you hit the ball. If performed properly, you should land on your shooting foot.

Step 4

Have a coach, teammate or friend record you as you take shots on goal. Review the video in slow motion to identify what you're doing wrong and how you can improve.

Tips and Warnings

  • Perform exercises to strengthen your core abdominal, lower back and hip muscles, which power your momentum as you twist your hips toward the ball.
  • Never kick the ball with your toe. By doing so, you sacrifice both power and accuracy.

Things You'll Need
