Allergies, too much alcohol, smoking or illness can all cause puffy eyes, according to Dr. Dennis Auckland, Director for the Center of Sleep Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The sensitive, thin skin under the eyelids responds to irritants by swelling and/or retaining fluid. The puffiness is usually worse in the mornings, when you've been lying down all night, but will resolve on its own after a few hours in an upright position. You can reduce the puffiness more quickly by using an eye gel.

Step 1

Apply a small dot of eye gel to the tip of your pinky finger. This finger is usually the weakest of your fingers. You don't want to injure the sensitive skin of your eye by applying too much pressure around the eye. The University of Maryland Medical Center cautions that rubbing the skin under the eye can cause wrinkles. Using your pinky to apply the eye gel ensures you use a lighter tough.

Step 2

Apply the gel to the outer corner of the eye and underneath the eye along the top of the cheekbone using a gentle, tapping motion. Don't worry about rubbing the gel in. Simply tap, tap, tap with the tip of your little finger until you've distributed the dot of gel under the eye.

You may feel a cold sensation as you apply the film. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, many eye gels contain ingredients that temporarily constrict the blood vessels beneath the eye. Other gels form a thin film under the eye to firm the skin.

Step 3

Apply a second dot of gel to your other eye, again using the pinky finger to gently tap the gel all around the eye along the top of the cheekbone. As the skin absorbs the gel, it will spread to the skin directly under the eye.
