If you are a baseball purist, you most likely think only wooden bats should be used to play the game. The wooden baseball bat is as much a part of the sport as the type of ball or the shape of the playing field. Because the bat is made of wood, it can get difficult to hold after repeated use. Because of this, you will need to tape the handle of the bat to maintain your grip.

Step 1

Place the bat on a flat surface. Sand down the wooden handle of the bat with sandpaper in order to remove any old tape residue.

Step 2

Rip off a piece of athletic tape about 5 inches long. Place one end of the tape on the bat handle so the side of the tape is touching the bottom knob. Wrap the tape once around the bat handle.

Step 3

Remove a 12 to 14 inch piece of tape from the tape roll. Place one end of the tape over the tape you already applied. This second piece of tape should be at a slight angle, between 5 and 10 degrees.

Step 4

Wrap the tape around the bat, maintaining the angle you started at the bottom. The tape will spiral around the bat handle. Finish the wrapping by sticking the end of the tape to the bat in one straight loop, mirroring the tape on the bottom.

Tips and Warnings

  • Press the tape down as you are applying in order to secure it to the wood.
  • Only sand the wood down far enough to remove any residue. If you sand too much, you risk weakening your bat.

Things You'll Need

  • Wooden bat
  • Athletic tape
  • Sand paper
