Using the same methods in your weight loss plan can cause you to plateau or stop losing weight. Making small changes to your dietary habits---and in your daily routine---will help you continue to lose weight and maintain your goal long-term.

Eat More Often

Do not skip meals. Skipping meals can slow your metabolism and you won't burn calories efficiently, according to military.com. Eat five to six mini-meals throughout the day to keep your stomach full but not stuffed. Eating frequently throughout the day will speed up your metabolism and help you lose weight.

Stop Eating Late at Night

When food is consumed late in the evening, it takes too long to metabolize and tends to be stored as fat, according to "The Ultimate Weight Solution."

Portion Control

Measure your portions with your hands instead of measuring cups and scales. Fruit and vegetables should fill one cupped hand per serving and lean meats should be the size of your palm, according to "The Mayo Clinic Diet."

Drink Water

Travel with a water bottle at all times. This will ensure your hydration needs are being met and keep you from consuming unnecessary calories. Mistaking thirst for hunger can cause overeating, according to the Michigan Surgeon General.

Ruin or Throw Away Excess or Tempting Foods

Use water, pepper or hot sauce to cover excess or tempting foods---or throw it away to keep from eating it. For example, if you tend to clean your plate even after you're full, eat half the portion and cover the rest in pepper, pour water over it or throw it away. Ruining your food or throwing it away is a tactic to keep you from overeating or succumbing to temptation. "You can't eat what's not there," says Dr. Phil McGraw, author of "The Ultimate Weight Solution."

Get Plenty of Sleep

Getting less than seven hours of sleep puts you at risk for weight gain and obesity---and the risk increases for every hour of lost sleep, according to the New York Times.
