The pH level of your body should be close to 7, the neutral between alkaline and acidic. According to Dr. Denice Moffat of Natural Health Techniques, the optimal pH of blood is between 7.35 and 7.45. Your body works hard to maintain the proper pH, and when you sleep, your body gets rid of its acidity making your first urination in the morning quite acidic.
Step 1
Notice any signs or symptoms of alkalosis. Dr. Ben Kim says alkalosis is a blood pH over 7.45, and severe alkalosis can result in death. Dr. Kim says alkalosis causes all nerves to become hypersensitive and easily excited. This may result in twitching or other spasms in the body.
Step 2
Visit your doctor and request a pH test. A doctor will be able to diagnose any changes in pH and can tell if you have acidosis, a pH below 7, or alkalosis. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says most people who suffer from an imbalanced pH have acidosis.
Step 3
Keep a journal of how you feel each day. This will be helpful to show your doctor for follow-up visits, in case there are any major changes in symptoms. Dr. Moffat suggests keeping a list of symptoms and writing down a score of 0 through 4, with 4 being the highest severity, next to each symptom each day.
Step 4
Urinate on a pH strip. Tear off a strip of the pH paper, being careful not to touch it against any substance until you urinate on it. Try to test your pH sometime in the middle of the day for best results. Compare the color of the pH paper with your urine to the color chart included with the pH paper to determine your body's pH.
Tips and Warnings
- Drink plenty of water. Water is a neutral substance, so drinking it will not throw off your pH levels.
