One of the most common symptoms of spring allergies, or hay fever, is coughing, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Allergies cause irritation and inflammation in various parts of body, such as the throat. The throat may feel dry, scratchy and irritated because of increased levels of histamine in the throat. Allergies that make someone cough are treatable with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Airborne Allergens
Airborne allergens, such as tree, grass or week pollen and mold spores are common causes of an allergic reaction that leads to coughing, according to MayoClinic.com. Airborne allergens are the most common during the spring because of plant life returning to life. Pollen and mold spores are released into the air and carried away by the wind. While avoiding allergens is the best treatment, during the spring month's pollen and mold are both completely unavoidable. Taking a daily antihistamine can help reduce the amount of allergic reaction symptoms.
Household Allergens
Household allergens can cause allergic coughing year-round, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Household allergens include pet dander, dust mites and cockroaches. If pet dander is causing an allergic reaction, either the pet needs to be eliminated from the home or provided its own living quarters that don't affect the entire home. Dust mites are primarily found in bedding and carpets and can be managed by washing sheets weekly in hot, soapy water and placing dust mite covers on mattresses. Cockroaches are eliminated by using pesticides and maintaining clean kitchen floors and counters. Remove all food particles and dried spills from the floor and counters to keep cockroaches away.
Allergic Asthma
Allergic asthma is an allergic condition that causes an asthmatic reaction because of exposure to an allergen, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Allergy-induced asthma affects about half of the people who have asthma and is primarily controlled by identifying and avoiding allergens. Allergic asthma causes inflammation in the airways, restricting breathing and leading to a constant cough. Other symptoms of allergy-induced asthma are chest pain, inability to breathe normally and chest congestion. Asthma could lead to a life-threatening situation and needs to be addressed by a medical doctor. People who suffer from allergic asthma may find relief by participating in allergy shot therapy. Allergy shots are a treatment that desensitizes the immune system to an allergen over a period of a few years.
