Tips on How to Put on Make-Up

Make-up can be used to enhance features or cover blemishes, create a style or change a mood. When applied properly, make-up looks natural and draws the eye toward your best features while understating any flaws. Make-up that's applied too heavily or that is not blended correctly looks amateurish and takes away from your innate beauty. Experiment and try new methods until you find techniques that provide the most natural, enhancing look for your particular features.

Step 1

Use sunblock creams underneath concealer to protect the skin and provide a smooth base for blending. Use concealer to cover red spots and dark circles under the eyes. Pat concealer gently over troubled spots with your middle finger and pat lightly with your ring finger, careful not to swipe it. Apply a little thicker amount over acne spots or other dark bumps and pat with a makeup sponge to blend.

Step 2

Put a light shade of eye shadow over the entire lid from eyelashes to brow and fill in the crease with a darker shade. Put a dot of white in the corner of each eye to open the eyes and make them seem lively.

Step 3

Apply a thin coat of mascara on both the upper and lower lashes to bring out the eyes. Use a brown pencil for a more natural look and black or black and brown combination for a more dramatic look. Widen your eyes by applying a second coat on the top lashes.

Step 4

Take care of eyebrows by brushing them upwards and snipping off long and curly hairs. Brush brows back into shape and tweeze stray hairs. Apply a light coat of eyebrow gel over the shaped brow to hold hairs in place.

Step 5

Tap excess blush off the end of the brush before applying to avoid putting too much color on the cheeks. Start on the apple of the cheeks as you smile in the mirror and extend the blush to the hairline for a natural look. Before putting it away, run the brush over your forehead, nose and chin to balance the slight blushing color on your face. Make-up stylists at Makeup Tip report that when blush is not blended well, it can add five years to a face.

Tips and Warnings

  • Clean your face well every day to provide a clean palette for your make-up. Exfoliate dry dead skin cells with a light brush or washcloth, remove deep dirt from pores with toner and use moisturizer for day and night.
  • Make sure to use lipliners that match your lipstick or are flesh colored to avoid a fake, awkward appearance.
