The gi is a uniform used for many martial arts practitioners. It is most commonly associated with Eastern martial arts such as karate, judo and jiujitsu, to name a few. The gi is a simple outfit designed to provide freedom of movement, which is necessary to martial arts practitioners. It also denotes that the person is a student of martial arts and often displays affiliation to a school, dojo or specific art. As a matter of respect and discipline, the gi must be worn in a particular way.

Step 1

Step into the gi pants. If they are of the drawstring variety, be sure to tie the drawstring tightly to ensure that the gi does not loosen during exercise.

Step 2

Put the gi jacket on as if it were a coat. Insert the right flap under the left and secure it in place. Next place the left flap over the right and secure it in place. The flap placement is important because any affiliation is affixed to the left side of the jacket.

Step 3

Wrap the obi or belt twice around the waist and over the jacket and tie together. Be mindful of how you tie your belt. Different schools of martial arts often tie their belts together with different types of knots. It is important to follow the instruction of the sensei in this regard.
