Prilosec OTC Information

Prilosec OTC is a brand name of a medication that is used to remedy heartburn. Prilosec is also sold as a prescription medication but was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for over-the-counter use in 2003. The manufacturers recommend a 14-day regimen to relieve symptoms associated with heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).

Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in Prilosec OTC is omeprazole magnesium.

Method

Prilosec OTC is a proton pump inhibitor drug, or PPI. PPI medications help prevent the stomach from producing acid. The reduction of acid helps relieve heartburn and acid reflux.

Dosage

One dose of Prilosec OTC is 20.6 mg of omeprazole and should be taken every morning with a full glass of water. Some people might not feel the effects of the medication for up to four days.

Side Effects

People who take Prilosec OTC might experience an upset stomach, diarrhea or constipation. Minor side effects can also include headaches and dizziness.

Drug Interactions

People who take blood thinners such as Coumadin or a heart drug called Digoxin might not be ideal candidates for using Prilosec OTC because of the potential for harmful drug interactions.
