Ambien is a brand name for the generic sedative-hypnotic medication zolpidem tartrate. Ambien helps correct the chemical imbalance in the brain that causes sleep disorders, such as insomnia, by promoting a good night's sleep. The drug slows brain activity, allowing the individual to relax and fall asleep. According to PubMed Health, zolpidem is available in both regular and extended-release oral tablets.

Low-Dose Tablet

Ambien is manufactured in 5 mg. pink capsule-shaped tablets imprinted with AMB 5 on one side and 5401 on the other. This low-dose form of Ambien is recommended for people who are elderly or debilitated, as well as those with significant liver disease, according to Rx List.

Higher-Dose Tablet

Ambien is also available in white 10 mg. capsule-shaped tablets marked with AMB 10 on one side and 5421 on the other. The recommended dose of Ambien for most adults is 10 mg. at night as needed for insomnia, says Rx List. Ten mg. is also the upper limit for Ambien in a 24-hour period, so this dose should be taken only once a day.

Low-Dose Extended Release

Ambien CR is the extended release version of zolpidem that contains two layers of medication. The first layer dissolves rapidly to allow the person to fall asleep quickly, and the other dissolves more slowly to promote continuous sleep for 7 to 8 hours. Ambien CR 6.25 mg. is a round pink tablet imprinted with A~ on one side. This low-dose extended release tablet is recommended for older adults, people with significant medical problems and those with liver disorders, according to Rx List.

Higher-Dose Extended Release

Ambien CR 12.5 mg. is a round blue tablet imprinted with A~ on one side. Physicians typically prescribe one Ambien 12.5 mg. a night for most adults. Don't repeat the dose in a 24-hour period, says Rx List, because 12.5 mg. of Ambien CR is the maximum recommended daily dose.
