Overview

Without the right haircare routine, you can develop scalp problems such as dandruff, or hair that's dry or oily. Healthy hair shows that you're healthy from the inside out, and that makes you feel good. Taking care of hair isn't difficult, but it does take the right products and a little know-how to keep hair glossy and healthy.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair often, but not too often. If your hair is oily, you may require frequent shampooing, even daily. But if you've got dry hair, shampooing too frequently will dry your hair out more, leaving it brittle and dull. People with dry hair may need to shampoo every other day or a few times a week. See what routine gives you the best results and the healthiest hair.

Step 2

Condition your hair. Even people with oily hair can benefit from a good conditioner, so don't skip out if you're afraid your hair will end up too greasy. Just condition hair on the ends, not the roots, to prevent oily hair along the scalp. If you've got dry hair, use a rich conditioner daily, and let it soak in for several minutes while you're in the shower.

Step 3

Use the right hair products. With so many to choose from, take some time to select the ones that are formulated for your hair. Use oil-free shampoos and conditioners if you have oily hair; look for moisturizing versions if you have dry hair. Look for volumizing products if your hair is a little limp, or products for curly hair to enhance your natural style. There are also formulas for people with color-treated or permed hair to help your style and color last longer.

Step 4

Take a break from styling. Constant use of hair products such as gels and hairsprays, and heated tools such as a blow dryer, curling iron or straightening iron can take a toll on your locks. Give yourself a break every now and then to prevent product buildup and too much damage from styling tools. Enjoy your natural style and how much time you save getting ready.

Step 5

Don't let dandruff ruin your hair. If you've got a dry, flaky scalp that leaves unsightly white flakes in your mane, stick to dandruff shampoos and conditioners that contain ingredients such as zinc or salicylic acid. Treat yourself to a gentle scalp massage, at least five minutes in the shower. This will loosen scales on your scalp and wash them out.

Step 6

Keep your hair trimmed regularly. Healthier hair grows faster, and regular trims can get rid of damaged, dead, split ends. Talk to your hairstylist or your barber about how often you need a haircut; most of the time, you should get a quick trim at least every six to eight weeks.

Step 7

Live a healthy lifestyle. What you eat and drink can affect your hair. Stick to a healthy diet with a variety of vitamins and minerals, and drink plenty of water to keep hair from drying out. Getting enough sleep and exercise will help your entire body, not just your hair.

Tips and Warnings

  • Switch shampoos and hair products regularly to see what works best for your hair.
  • Don't avoid getting haircuts if you're trying to make your hair grow longer. The dead ends will only slow growth.
