Medifast is a very-low calorie diet used frequently by doctors to treat overweight and obese patients. On Medifast, you're not taught how to make smarter food choices. Instead, you replace several of your daily meals with a Medifast product. Originally, this meant a shake, although other Medifast products are now available. In the end, whether Medifast is the right choice for you or not is something you need to discuss with your doctor.

Step 1

Eat five Medifast meals throughout the day. Depending on your taste and preferences, you can choose shakes, fruit drinks, bars, puddings, hot cereal and soups, among others. You don't need to count calories or look at nutrition labels, as the meals come already balanced so you can choose freely. Mix and match options so you don't get bored from having the same thing over and over.

Step 2

Eat or drink one non-Medifast meal every day. It doesn't matter if you have that meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This should consist of protein and vegetables. No carbs or added fats are allowed. Your meals shouldn't be fried.

Step 3

Choose a lean protein for your non-Medifast meal. Chicken, turkey and fish are good options. Medifast also allows meats that are higher in fats, such as beef, pork and shellfish. If you have high cholesterol or other medical condition, ask your doctor before choosing a high-fat option. Meatless proteins, such as soy or eggs, are also allowed. Don't eat more than 7 oz. of meat.

Step 4

Add three servings of vegetables to the meal. According to the official Medifast website, what constitutes a serving of vegetables depends on what vegetables you choose. A cup of collards, lettuce, raw spinach or watercress is a serving. Half a cup of asparagus, kale, sprouts, broccoli, squash, scallions or peppers are also considered a serving.
