Women will not have a problem exercising in Northeast Philadelphia. It is one of the most heavily populated areas in Philadelphia, with plenty of fitness clubs close to the New Jersey border and throughout the region. Whether you desire a women's only facility or you want to take a class strictly for women, the Northeast Philadelphia area has a location. And after a few hours of exercise, you can easily reach many of the area attractions within 30 minutes, such as Franklin Mills shopping center, the Roosevelt Mall and the Liberty Bell Park Racetrack.

Just for Women

Curves has three Curves locations in Philadelphia, as of September 2010. You can find a facility in the areas of South Passyunk, Chesnut and Fishtown. Curves boasts that "by completing the 30-minute workout plan, you can burn approximately 500 calories." In addition, you can attend the free monthly classes on a variety of subjects, such as weight loss, metabolism and healthy eating appetites.

Women's Self-Defense/Jiu-Jitsu

Balance Studios offers an eight- to 12-week self-defense program. The class combines Brazilian jiu-jitsu, yoga and strength training. Women learn to escape unsafe circumstances. Also, the facility offers Brazilian jiu-jitsu for women, once you have completed the Grace Basic Program.

Social Organization

The Philadelphia YMCA has 11 locations, including the Northeast Family Y. The Northeast Family YMCA is a co-ed facility, but women attend most of the group exercise classes, such as Zumba and dance aerobics. If you feel more comfortable working one-on-one with a personal trainer, you can receive 10 sessions for $345, as of September 2010. In addition, your children can attend the Northeast Family Child Care while you exercise. The Northeast YMCA also has a YMCA Gymnastics Girl Team.

Neighborhood Fitness Club

It Figures is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fitness-club owner is a cancer survivor who wanted to teach and inspire women to have a healthier lifestyle by exercising and eating properly. The facility has an on-site registered dietitian, certified herbal specialist and massage therapists. Some classes available help tone the butt, flatten the stomach and increase flexibility.

East Coast Club for Women

Lucille Roberts caters to women's health and physical fitness on the East Coast. You can find a Lucille Roberts in New York, New Jersey and two facilities in Pennsylvania, including the Roosevelt Boulevard fitness club in Northeast Philadelphia. Some classes available at the Northeast facility include the Just Dance class that helps tone flabby arms and tighten the abs; the Triple Fat Burner, which incorporates cardio kickboxing to assist in burning fat; and the mega-mix workout that combines strength training, jump rope, kickboxing and aerobics in one workout.
