Ginger is a spicy root vegetable used in cooking and medicinally since ancient times. Indian, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese cuisines include it as a popular spice. Fermented ginger is an ingredient in ginger ale and ginger beer. To unlock the flavor of ginger root, you should bruise it first, which involves smashing and pressing the ginger until it turns into pulp.

Step 1

Cut the ginger into small pieces.

Step 2

Place the small pieces in a plastic bag and seal.

Step 3

Roll over the plastic bag with a rolling pin to smash and break apart the pieces.

Tips and Warnings

  • Instead of using a rolling pin, you can smash the ginger with a mallet. Peel the ginger first before smashing if the recipe you are using requires it.
  • Ginger can sting in open wounds, so wear a bandage if you have any cuts or scrapes on your fingers.
