High Testosterone Levels in Women & Symptoms

Testosterone belongs to a group of hormones called androgens which play a role in puberty, sexuality, the production of hair and in the function of other body organs. Most commonly associated with male sexuality, testosterone is produced by both men and women. Left untreated, high androgen levels in women can result in serious health issues, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease. A woman noticing the symptoms of high testosterone should see her doctor.

Normal Levels

The normal testosterone range for a female is 30 to 95 ng/dL, or nanograms per deciliter, according to MedlinePlus. However, various labs have their own normal value range, so women should consult with a physician to learn whether their testosterone levels are considered high and if a course of treatment is needed.

Causes

Testosterone is produced in the testicles of men and ovaries of women. It is also made in the adrenal gland of both sexes to maintain proper hormone balance. Disease or tumors in the adrenal glands or ovaries can cause the over-production of testosterone.

Increased Hair Growth

A woman with high testosterone may experience hirsutism, or male pattern hair growth, especially on her face and chest. Hirsutism can be reversed once testosterone levels are restored to normal values.

Male Pattern Baldness

A female may experience male pattern baldness, or losing her hair at the top of her head. A receding hairline is not uncommon, and complete baldness is possible.

Deepening Voice

A deepening voice may be a symptom of high testosterone in women. Because it is difficult to hear one's own voice, a woman may not even realize her voice is deeper.

Change in Body Shape

A woman with high testosterone may notice a change in body shape over a long period of time. Her body may take on male body characteristics, a condition called virilization, according to the Merck Manuals Online Medical Library. These changes may include increased muscle mass and increased body fat. Extreme cases may include a decrease in breast size and an enlarged clitoris.

Skin Problems

A woman may complain of skin problems while her testosterone is high. Her skin can be oily and she may have acne. This symptom is often overlooked or masked with beauty products.

Irregular Menstrual Cycles

Women may experience irregular or nonexistent menstrual periods, according to Lab Tests Online. A woman may also be unable to get pregnant while her testosterone is imbalanced.

Mood Swings

Mood swings are a reported symptom of high testosterone in women. A woman may become more aggressive as her testosterone rises.
