Mini golf, also called putt-putt golf, has been around since the 19th century. The oldest course in the world is in St. Andrews, Scotland, and was established in 1867. Mini golf moved to the United States in the early 1920s, when Tom Thumb Golf formed the first mini-golf franchise. In Maryland, courses found all across the state range from professionally landscaped courses to wacky, kid-themed adventure parks.
Gaithersburg
Gaithersburg's Bohrer Park is the scene for 18 beautiful rounds of mini golf. You won't play the same course twice as the holes change every day. The course is set in the middle of the park, so lush greenery, trees and landscaping abound. Persons of all ages can take part, including those with disabilities since Bohrer Park is wheelchair and stroller accessible. When you finish putting, cool off at the park's pool and experience the 250-foot water slide.
Ocean City
Jolly Roger is the largest family amusement center in Maryland, with five themed parks spanning two locations. The two courses at the mini-golf park include Treasure Hunt and Jungle Golf. Jungle Golf takes you through forests, waterfalls, mountains and lakes, which would be relaxing if it weren't for all the wild animals that pop up around the course. If you play the Treasure Hunt course, be on alert for the pirates roaming around trying to protect their loot.
Abingdon
The Putt Putt Fun Center in Abingdon offers more than just mini golf. The LazerXperience lets you battle one on one or roam around with a team; the BatZone lets you or your team practice batting, and dozens of arcade games mean lots of chances at racking up prizes. If your child wants to have a party, relax and play a round yourself while the party hostess runs the event.
Severna Park
Putter Falls Mini Golf is not your typical fun-filled, family-oriented course. It was designed by Harris Miniature Golf, a national mini-golf course designer, and features an 8-foot rock as the centerpiece. Classy landscaping and challenging holes make this a course more geared toward adults. Hole 18 is a tough shot to make, but if you get a hole in one you win a free game. Putter Falls is part of the larger Severna Park Golf Center.
Baltimore
Lunar Mini Golf is an ideal place to play. The course is completely under black light, so everything glows. Lunar also sells items that glow, including golf balls, basketballs, bracelets, earrings and swords. Parties include 90 minutes of mini-golf play, plus free glow-in-the-dark bracelets, use of the Party Zone and a shot at the Prize Hole. Lunar Mini Golf is located within Baltimore's White Marsh Mall and open every day of the week.
