When fishing deeper waters--whether for catfish, snapper, grouper, or other bottom-dwelling game fish--a bank, pyramid or pancake sinker as a drop weight on your line gets your bait down to the fish. A modified bottom finder rig with a drop weight attached to your line by a large snap swivel allows you to swap out the weight quickly to accommodate changing fishing conditions. This relatively simple rig takes just a few minutes to assemble and works well for both freshwater and saltwater fishing.
Step 1
Tie the end of your main fishing line to a three-way swivel using an improved clinch knot. Insert the end of the line through one of the eyelets in the swivel, then through the eyelet again to create a loop around the eyelet. Wrap the end of the fishing line around the main line 4 to 6 times and insert the end of the line through the loop that goes around the eyelet. Thread the line between the wraps and the line next to them. Lubricate the knot with saliva or water and pull the knot tight to the swivel. Trim any excess fishing line from the knot with scissors or nail clippers. Use this knot for the remaining ties in this rig.
Step 2
Tie an appropriate length of leader line to one of the eyelets on the three-way swivel. Tie a hook onto the end of that leader line.
Step 3
Attach a 12- to 24-inch length of fishing line to the remaining eyelet on the three-way swivel. Tie the end of that line to the eyelet on the large swivel.
Step 4
Open the snap on the swivel. Attach the sinker to the swivel snap and close the snap, securely. Your drop weight rig is ready to fish.
