One of the difficult issues with becoming pregnant is that conception can only occur when a mature egg is available to be fertilized, a time also known as ovulation. The period in which an egg can be fertilized is narrow, so many women seeking to become pregnant find it helpful to try to predict when ovulation will occur.
Step 1
Determine the date of your last menstrual period, as well as the length of your menstrual cycles. Your menstrual cycle length can be determined by counting the days between periods.
Step 2
Make an ovulation calendar. Ovulation typically occurs at the midpoint of the menstrual cycle. Because the average menstrual cycle is 28 days, the midpoint of the cycle (and when ovulation occurs) is 14 days after the last menstrual period.
Step 3
Use an ovulation prediction kit, available at most any drugstore. These tests measure the levels of a hormone (called lutenizing hormone) in the urine. Lutenizing hormone levels jump in the urine 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. These ovulation prediction kits should be used according to the instructions on the package. You should begin to use these kits a few days before your predicted date of ovulation.
