Developed by Dr. Shizuo Inoue, the original Chi Machine was inspired by the undulating action of the goldfish tail. By oscillating the feet in a motion that mimics the swimming motion of fish, proponents claim the machine provides a full body massage, reduces stress and improves circulation. The machine is a popular and effective stress management tool, according to the Weber State University Stress Management Lab.
According to research conducted by the School of Medicine, Bedford Park, South Australia, patients who participated in a three-week treatment plan using the machine experienced a significant reduction in leg lymphedema. The machine was featured in a 2009 segment of The Doctors television show.
Step 1
Place a yoga mat or soft exercise pad on the floor in a quiet area within a few feet of a standard electrical outlet.
Step 2
Lie face-up on the pad with the arms extended comfortably along the side of the body. Place your hands behind your head to relieve a sore back or a migraine headache or lift both arms above the head to help relieve shoulder pain.
Step 3
Place the ankles on the footrest that sits on top of the machine. Turn on the machine and set the timer for an appropriate amount of time. Avoid resisting the movement of the machine and allow the feet to oscillate back and forth.
Step 4
Limit the use of the machine to 5 minutes for the first couple of days. Work up to one or two daily sessions of 15 minutes for optimal results.
Step 5
Turn off the machine and lie quietly for several minutes. Allow the chi to move throughout the body. This is a physical response frequently described as a tingling sensation.
