Breaking in a catcher's glove is essential before you use it in a game. This can be a bit easier with a catcher's mitt than it is with a standard fielder's glove because you don't have to shape the pocket. When you purchase your catcher's mitt, it is the proper shape to begin with, and the only thing you really have to do is loosen it just enough so that you can open and close it enough to secure the ball.
Step 1
Use shaving cream to loosen the leather in your catcher's mitt. Place two good-sized squirts in the palm of the glove and rub it in thoroughly. Take a rag and wipe away the excess shaving cream.
Step 2
Place two baseballs in the pocket of the mitt so it will be deep and secure. Close the glove tightly and then wrap it with rope. Keep the glove in this position for at least eight hours.
Step 3
Untie the glove and then play catch with a hard-throwing teammate for 15 to 20 minutes. This will help get the glove ready to warm up a pitcher or prepare it for game conditions.
Step 4
Pour glove oil in the palm of the glove and work it in vigorously with your fingers. Dry off the excess with a rag. Place two baseballs in the palm and tie it up again for a period of four to six hours.
Step 5
Catch pitches from one of the hardest-throwing pitchers on your team. This will break down the leather in the catcher's mitt even further.
