Textured vegetable protein, also called TVP, is a soy-based meat substitute that provides the same chewiness as ground beef. TVP comes in dry chunks or crumbles and is rehydrated to be used in recipes. This thrifty and versatile ingredient absorbs the flavor of the marinade, sauce or spices with which it is cooked. Chili, spaghetti sauce and tacos are just a few of the foods in which TVP can replace beef.

Step 1

Measure TVP and liquid in a 1-to-1 ratio. A cup of TVP will absorb a cup of water.

Step 2

Boil water or vegetable broth in a saucepan.

Step 3

Empty the dry TVP into a large enough mixing bowl that it has room to expand.

Step 4

Pour the water or broth over the TVP. Cover the bowl with a plate and allow it to stand for 15 minutes.

Step 5

Season the TVP with salt, pepper and the spices called for in your recipe. Let it stand for 15 more minutes, then add it to your recipe.
