Sciatic nerve pain--sciatica--is a symptom of another medical problem, such as an injury, slipped disc or tumor, according to MedlinePlus. The pain may come in waves, producing mild tingling or burning sensations. Some people experience a dull ache while others have debilitating pain. The good news is that approximately 80 to 90 percent of sciatic pain sufferers get better without surgery, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In the meantime, home remedies may help.

Exercise

Resting may seem like a practical remedy for sciatic nerve pain, particularly if pain occurs with movement. However, MayoClinic.com advises against bed rest for prolonged periods, as the lack of activity can worsen the pain. Instead, sciatic pain sufferers should try light exercises that stretch the back and offer pain relief by increasing endorphins---natural painkilling chemicals in the body.

NSAIDs

Nonprescription NSAIDs---nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs--such as aspirin and ibuprofen, are among the most widely used medications for general aches and pains. Many people keep them on hand for occasional use, and for most people they are safe in moderation. Excessive use, however, can cause side effects including stomach discomfort, which may lead to ulcers, according to the American College of Gastroenterology. Those who plan to use the medications to reduce sciatic nerve pain for more than a few days should consult their doctor.

Hot and Cold Therapy

Heat and ice can be alternated to reduce inflammation and ease sciatic nerve pain. MayoClinic.com recommends wrapping a commercial ice pack or frozen package of vegetables in a towel and applying to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, several times daily. After several days, a heating pad or homemade heat pack---such as a warm damp towel---can be applied. If pain continues, alternating hot and cold applications may help provide relief.

Epsom Salt Soak

Adding Epsom salt to a warm bath is a soothing way to relieve sciatic nerve pain. The components of Epsom salt--magnesium and sulfates--provide individual benefits to the body including muscle pain relief, reduced inflammation and natural stress relief, according to the Epsom Salt Counsel.
