Diet shakes, bars, frozen foods and snacks are available at local pharmacies, vitamin shops and even supermarkets. These foods all have something in common, though. They're not cheap. At several dollars per package, you're looking at a hundred dollars a week or more to keep your diet in check. And that's without taking into consideration that many diet foods are low in nutrients. Rather than focusing on commercial diet food, consider looking into foods that are naturally low in calories and can help you drop pounds cheaply and healthily.

Fruits and Vegetables

Forget boxed fruit juices and canned fruits, which are often loaded with sugar. Go for the cheaper option, and stock up on fruits and vegetables, which are high in fiber and low in calories. According to the Diet Channel, fiber fills you up so you naturally end up eating less. Foods high in fiber, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, are naturally low in sugar and calories. To reduce costs, buy only what's in season, or get bags of frozen veggies. Add veggies to anything you cook, from soups to casseroles to homemade hamburger mix. This will increase the bulk of your meal, and you won't even notice you're eating extra vegetables.

Lean Protein

Lentils, beans and soy are all good sources of protein that cost little and contain few calories. Use them frequently instead of high-fat protein sources such as beef or pork, and you'll be on your way to weight loss. Chicken and turkey are also good options, as long as you broil, bake or grill your foods. Avoid frying and using oils when cooking to keep the calorie content under control. Buy lean meats when they're on sale, and freeze whatever you won't use over the course of a few days. Salmon and other types of fish can be expensive, but mackerel and sardines are not. With these options, you'll get the low-calorie protein for much less.

Dairy

Low-fat dairy products are good diet foods if eaten in moderation. Skip sugary yogurts, which are often high in calories and expensive for their size. Instead, buy plain, unsweetened yogurt and add pieces of chopped fruit. Low-fat mozzarella sticks are also a quick, easy snack--but expensive if you buy them in individual packages. Instead, buy a block of low-fat mozzarella cheese and cut your own sticks.
