Ortho Evra is the brand name of a birth control patch. This form of hormonal contraception was approved by the FDA in 2002. When used correctly, Ortho Evra can be just as effective as birth control pills. Women over the age of 35 should discuss the benefits and risks of using Ortho Evra, according to its manufacturers, Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
Active Ingredients
The active ingredients in Ortho Evra are norelgestromin (progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (estrogen).

Planned Parenthood estimates that when Ortho Evra is worn as directed, the patch is 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy.
Side Effects
Side effects may occur during the first three months of use. Women may experience spotting between periods, nausea and breast tenderness.
