Loestrin 24 is an oral contraceptive. These medications work to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting the ovaries from releasing eggs and altering the consistency of the uterine lining and cervical mucous. According to Drugs.com, Loestrin 24 contains the hormones ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone. Oral contraceptives do not prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections or HIV. There are some side effects associated with Loestrin 24.

Nausea and Vomiting

Some women who take combination oral contraceptives such as Loestrin 24 may experience nausea and vomiting. Nausea and vomiting may lessen over time as the body has a chance to get used to the hormones in Loestrin. Taking the pill at night or with meals may help to lessen such effects. Women who experience severe or persistent vomiting should consult their gynecologist. They may recommend a change in medication.

Breast Pain, Tenderness, and Swelling

Loestrin 24 may cause breast pain, tenderness or swelling. These side effects occur in relation to the hormones in Loestrin. As the body adjusts to new hormone levels, these side effects may subside. Women should continue with self-breast examination and mammography as recommended by their health-care provider. Any changes in breast tissue should be promptly reported to a doctor. According to the drug's manufacturer, Warner Chilcott, women who currently have or have had cancer of the breast should not use hormonal contraceptives because breast cancer is usually a hormone-sensitive tumor.

Breakthrough Bleeding

Birth control pills can cause breakthrough bleeding, which may be more likely to occur in the first three months of treatment, explains Drugs.com. Breakthrough bleeding that persists may be a sign of something more serious and should be brought to the attention of a physician. In some cases, a different type of contraception may be recommended.

Changes in Weight and Appetite

Some women have reported mild weight gain and changes in appetite while taking oral contraceptives. Maintaining a sensible diet and exercising regularly can help to prevent unwanted weight gain.

Decreased Libido

Some women have experienced a decrease in libido, or sex drive while taking Loestrin 24. If such side effects become bothersome an alternate method of birth control should be discussed with a physician.
