Natural Ways to Treat Acid Reflux

Pain and gas--just two of the symptoms associated with acid reflux--often can be treated with prescription and over-the-counter medications. However, there also are a number of ways to manage symptoms of acid reflux, and treat them, with more natural methods.

Supplements

Dr. Allan E. Sosin, founder and medical director of the Institute for Progressive Medicine in Irvine, California, says in some instances acid reflux may be treated with nutritional supplements. Glutamine, an anti-inflammatory that is found in foods, such as dairy products, chicken and beef, may reduce inflammation in the intestines, while aloe vera can help ailments like stomach upset and diarrhea. Other supplements that prove beneficial are licorice or apple cider vinegar to reduce stomach acid and sodium bicarbonate--also called baking soda--which may relieve symptoms of stomach upset and heartburn.

Diet

Avoiding certain trigger foods when you have acid reflux is important, as they can cause symptoms to flare up. Spicy, fatty foods, foods and beverages with caffeine--such as chocolate, coffee and tea--and spearmint should be avoided.

Herbs

According to Acid Reflux Info, drinking an herbal tea blend of anise, peppermint and lavender helps calm digestive issues like acid reflux. Drinking chamomile or fennel tea is another option, as is taking chicory root supplements (or eating endive or escarole).

Lifestyle

Those who experience acid reflux should avoid and find ways to manage stress, maintain a healthy weight and consume nutritious foods in order to minimize the incidence of unpleasant symptoms. Other considerations include quitting smoking and not laying down right after eating.
