Clarithromycin is a medication in a class of drugs named macrolide antibiotics. Macrolide antibiotics work by killing bacteria in the body that cause illness. According to Drugs.com, clarithromycin is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections affecting the skin and respiratory system and may be used together with other medications to treat stomach ulcers. There are some side effects associated with clarithromycin 250 mg.

Abnormal Taste

Some patients taking clarithromycin 240 mg may develop an abnormal taste in their mouth. This side effect should be temporary and diminish once treatment with clarithromycin is complete. Although this medication may cause food and drink to taste different, it is important to maintain an adequate nutritional intake. Patients who experience a loss of appetite due to abnormal taste may consider taking a liquid nutritional supplement daily, such as Boost or Ensure.

Tooth Discoloration

Calrithromycin 250 mg may cause some users to develop tooth discoloration. This discoloration may or may not be permanent. Patients who develop tooth discoloration should consult their dentist for treatment.

Dizziness and Headache

Patients taking this medication may develop dizziness or headache. Patients should not operate a vehicle or do other potentially hazardous activities until they know how clarithromycin 250 mg will affect them. Patients who experience a headache that becomes bothersome should consult their doctor regarding the use of an over-the-counter pain medication to relieve headache. If headache is accompanied by flu-like symptoms, a physician should be notified, says Drugs.com.

Skin Rash

Some patients taking a macrolide antibiotic may develop a skin rash. A mild skin rash can be treated with topical antihistamine cream or a colloidal oatmeal bath. In some cases, a skin rash may be a sign of a serious reaction to clarithromycin. According to PubMed Health, if the skin develops hives, blisters or the appearance of red splotches, a doctor should be called immediately.

Nausea and Diarrhea

Clarithromycin 250 mg may cause nausea and diarrhea. Taking clarithromycin with food or milk may help to lessen these effects. Patients who experience diarrhea should increase their daily water intake to prevent dehydration. Severe diarrhea should be reported to a doctor.
