According to the staff at the Mayo Clinic, eating a healthy breakfast is one of the best things you can do for your health. A healthy breakfast has many benefits for adults and children, including better concentration and weight control. Ready-to-eat cereals provide a quick and easy breakfast, but not all cereals are equal with respect to nutritional content. The Food Advertising to Children and Teens Score (FACTS), developed by the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University, ranks cereal according to nutritional quality.
Post Shredded Wheat Original
Shredded wheat is an adult cereal without any artificial sweeteners, sugar, sodium or dyes and is ranked number one of the top 10 cereals. This cereal has 13 percent fiber content.
Post Shredded Wheat Spoon Size Original
This cereal has the same ranking as the full-size shredded wheat in the number one ranking but with a lower fiber content of 12 percent.
Barbara's Bakery Shredded Wheat
This brand of shredded wheat has the same nutritional score and content of the spoon-size shredded wheat in the number two ranking.
Kashi Puffs Seven Whole Grains Puffs
This puffs cereal does not contain any sugar, dyes, sodium or sweeteners, but has a much lower fiber content, at only 5 percent.
Post Shredded Wheat Spoon Size Wheat 'n Bran
This version of shredded wheat contains more fiber than the first three at 14 percent, but also has a 2 percent sugar content.
Kellogg's Mini-Wheats Unfrosted/ Bite Size
Bite-size mini wheats is a family cereal with a 10 percent fiber content and a 2 percent sugar content. This cereal also has 17 milligrams of sodium per 100 grams.
Uncle Sam
Uncle Sam cereal has a lower nutritional profiling index score than the first six cereals. The fiber content is higher, however, at 18 percent, but the sodium content is also higher at 245 milligrams per 100 grams. Sugar content is 2 percent.
General Mills Fiber One Original (Bran)
Fiber One has a higher fiber content than any of the other cereals--47 percent. It does contain an artificial sweetener, aspartame, and has 350 milligrams of sodium per 100 grams.
Kashi-Shredded Wheat-Autumn Wheat
This brand of shredded wheat has a 13 percent sugar content and 11 percent fiber content, but no sodium, sweetener or dyes.
Nature's Path Synergy Eight Whole Grains
Synergy Eight does not have any sugar, sweetener or dyes and has a sugar content of 13 percent and a fiber content of 17 percent.
