Jojoba oil is highly recommended for dry hair and for other hair and scalp conditions as well. A little goes a long way, so it is also relatively inexpensive.
Jojoba oil can be mixed into shampoos and conditioners. It is good for all types of hair, and particularly good for long hair and curly hair.

What Is Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba oil comes from the seed of a plant that is indigenous to the southwestern United States and to Mexico. The formal name of the plant is Simmondsia Chinensis. The oil is particularly useful for treating your hair and scalp because it closely simulates human sebum, the oil that normally protects the hair and skin from getting too dry.

Jojoba Oil and Dry Hair

Many hair products leave hair dry, brittle and damaged. As "World of Hair" notes, blow drying and sometimes even combing hair can lead to breakage. Jojoba oil removes dirt, grime, bacteria and buildup from hair without stripping the hair. In fact, jojoba hydrates hair from the inside of the hair shaft. It penetrates and helps repair split ends as well. It is an emollient and moisturizer which also has properties that encourage skin health.

Other Benefits of Jojoba Oil

According to "World of Hair," the skin of the scalp needs moisturizing just as the skin on other parts of the body does. Jojoba oil doesn't irritate dry, itchy or sore scalps, and its antibacterial properties aid in healing. In addition, jojoba oil is non-greasy, colorless and odorless. It helps restore your hair's shine and luster.

How to Use Jojoba Oil

"Care Fair" suggests a number of ways to use jojoba oil for dry or damaged hair. For example, a few drops of pure jojoba oil can be mixed into regular shampoos or conditioners. Or it can be used for weekly hot oil treatments, which can prevent dry hair.

Considerations

Jojoba oil is inexpensive and effective, but do not apply it directly to the hair or the hair will look greasy. According to "The Hair Energizer," jojoba oil moisturizers are healthy substitutes for mineral oil moisturizers for African Americans interested in hair growth. It is also an effective moisturizer for long hair. You can find jojoba oil as an ingredient in many commercial shampoos and conditioners.
