Soft, smooth skin looks supple and can make you appear younger. The best way to have smooth skin is to prevent damage in the first place by keeping your skin protected from wind, cold, dry air and sun. As you age, your skin will begin to show wrinkles, age spots and freckles in response to being exposed to the elements for decades. To keep your skin looking its best, develop an effective and simple skin-care regimen.

Step 1

Wash with tepid water, suggests "Ladies' Home Journal." Whether you are washing your hands or taking a shower, avoid hot water, which is drying and will rob skin of smoothness. Use a mild cleanser regularly, and occasionally use a gentle scrub to whisk away tiny flakes of dead skin, revealing the smoother, healthier skin underneath.

Step 2

Apply moisturizer. A good lotion will lock in moisture and plump up your skin, making it feel and look smoother. Rub it in well to help relax your muscles, and may reduce the appearance of wrinkling, says "Redbook" magazine.

Step 3

Shave any body or facial hair that you normally do, even in the winter when hair is more likely to be covered and less noticeable, says "Ladies' Home Journal." Shaving will remove dead skin and will leave the healthy skin soft and smooth. MayoClinic.com suggests you use a warm washcloth to soften hair, apply shaving cream or lotion to lubricate your skin and shave in the direction of hair growth.

Step 4

Apply sunscreen every day before leaving the house. "Fitness" magazine states that using an SPF 30 sunscreen regularly can prevent many signs of aging, which often make your skin appear wrinkled, dull or rough.

Tips and Warnings

  • Protect your skin from damage by wearing gloves when washing dishes and donning a scarf before heading outdoors in windy or very cold weather.
