The Best Two Way Radios for Skiing

What To Look For

GMRS radios offer more power and channels for transmission than FRS models. According to renowned backcountry skier and WildSnow blogger Lou Dawson, FRS radios offer limited use that is best for direct, line-of-sight communication. Many radios designed for outdoor use are dual-band, capable of operating on both FRS and GMRS channels. Verify that you're purchasing a radio that runs the same frequencies and has the same features as those used by the others in your group. Look for a model with simple, easy-to-access buttons that you'll be able to use with ski gloves or mitts. Some radios feature voice activation that allows for hands-free communication. Integrated GPS such as that featured in Garmin Rino units lets you keep track of other members of your group, and an NOAA weather radio will help you track weather patterns. A scanning feature will help you find open channels for communicating with your group.

Common Pitfalls

Beware that maximum transmission numbers are designated under ideal conditions. In real world skiing, where trees, mountains, cliffs and other impediments will get in the way, the actual transmission distance that you experience will usually be far less than maximum. According to REI, two-way radios typically offer two miles or less of range in 90 percent of usage situations. Note that GMRS radios and FRS/GMRS radios on which you plan to use GMRS channels require an operator's license from the FCC while FRS radios do not.

Where To Buy

You can find GMRS and FRS radios at a variety of retailers that includes big box department stores, outdoor sports retailers and electronic stores. Some specific stores where you'll find radios by Motorola, Midland and Garmin are Walmart, REI and Best Buy.

Cost

Two-way radios sold for skiing and outdoor use typically range between $40 and $100 per pair. Advanced models that combine GPS navigation are significantly more expensive, running up to $500 or $600.
