Cervical Cancer Causes & Symptoms

Cervical cancer is normally a type of cancer that progresses slowly, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The NCI estimates that in 2009, more than 11,000 women will be diagnosed with the potentially deadly disease. Education about the causes and symptoms of cervical cancer might help women take steps to protect their health.

Genetic Mutation

The American Cancer Society explains that cervical cancer can be the result of a form of genetic mutation. Genes that are "told" through a malfunctioning of the DNA to turn off tumor surpressor genes might be the answer for tumor growth in many cancers.

HPV Virus

The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the cause of most cases of cervical cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. Women younger than 26 years old might be able to receive vaccination against HPV.

Lack of Symptoms

The ACS states women might be asymptomatic during the earliest stages of cervical cancer. Because of this, women should keep up with routine screening such as pap smears each year.

Abnormal Bleeding

Abnormal bleeding and vaginal discharge are often symptoms of cancer that has spread from the cervix to other tissues. Bleeding might occur between periods, after sex or might be heavy and prolonged during menstruation.

Pain

Women who have cervical cancer might experience pain during sexual intercourse, according to the ACS.
