It seems that Americans are having a love affair with pizza. Each day, Americans eat about 100 acres of pizza, or a startling 350 slices per second, according to the Agricultural Council of America. There are more than 60,000 pizzerias in the United States, with approximately 3 billion pizzas sold each year.

History

Donatos Pizza is a franchise founded in 1963. According to the company website, Donatos Pizza is "made of only the freshest ingredients," and all trans-fat free. Donatos and its franchise partners operate more than 185 stores in six states. The company has extended its "Take & Bake" product line to more than 400 locations nationally.

'No Dough' Pizza

In 2006, Donatos introduced its "No Dough" low-carbohydrate pizza as a lower calorie menu option. Donatos No Dough pizzas come in individual serving sizes only with the toppings baked on a bed of soy crumbles. Of the 14 No Dough varieties, calories range from 418 for the Donatos Vegy to 653 for the Serious Meat. In the midrange, there are 457 calories in the Serious Cheese No Dough pizza and 547 calories in a serving of The Works.

Thin Crust

Compare these counts to the 544 calories for a Thin Crust Vegy pizza and 736 calories for a serving of the Serious Meat version. A serving of Donatos Thin Crust pizza is equal to one individual size pizza or one-quarter serving of a larger pie. A serving of the Serious Cheese Thin Crust pizza amounts to 627 calories, while the The Works has a count of 689 calories.

Thicker Crust

Calorie amounts jump even higher for the Thicker Crust versions---715 calories for Thicker Crust Vegy pizza, 798 for Serious Cheese, 847 for The Works and 907 calories for the Serious Meat pizza. Like the Thin Crust pizzas, a serving size of a Thicker Crust Donatos pizza equals an individual pie or one-quarter of a larger pie.

Hand Tossed

Yet another variety of crust is Donatos Hand-Tossed pizza line, which the company introduced in 2009. The caloric intake for hand-tossed pizzas are similar to the calories of the Thin Crust versions. A serving size, or two slices, of the Hand Tossed Vegy Pizza has 550 calories, while two slices of the Serious Meat has 735 calories. The Serious Cheese Hand Tossed pizza has 597 calories and The Works has 669 calories per serving.

Nutritional Guide

To help consumers plan their meals and watch their caloric intake, Donatos offers a personal nutritional guide on its website. Just select the items from the menu and receive a nutritional overview for your meal. The number of calories, fat, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, sugars and vitamins for each item you choose will be displayed; however, you may want to have a calculator handy as the program doesn't calculate the totals.
