Cellulite is a form of fat characterized by an uneven, dimpled appearance. The American Council on Exercise says that genetics, gender, age and activity level determine whether and how severely a person will develop cellulite. Many people are interested in eliminating or improving the appearance of cellulite but fall prey to quick fixes like creams and body wraps that aren't truly effective. While it may not be possible to erase cellulite completely, there are ways to tone and decrease it.
Step 1
Engage in frequent cardiovascular exercise, such as running, bicycling, walking and dancing. Daily cardiovascular exercise is best for treating cellulite, says the American Council on Exercise. Cardio workouts burn fat and improve body composition and appearance.
Step 2
Begin strength training. Strength-training exercises, such as squats, lunges, push-ups and sit-ups build muscle and tone the body, giving a sleeker, slimmer appearance. Include two to three strength-training workouts per week for optimal results in reducing and toning cellulite.
Step 3
Maintain good nutrition. MayoClinic.com says that weight loss--through diet and exercise--is the most effective treatment for cellulite. Eating a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein will help you lose excess body fat, which decreases cellulite.
Tips and Warnings
- Consult a physician before beginning any new exercise regimen. If you're unsure how to begin an exercise program, consult a personal trainer for detailed guidance.
