CPR, or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, can be a vital skill to learn, especially if you are around children. Babysitters, lifeguards and camp counselors are all groups of people who are highly encouraged to learn CPR for children, according to the Boston Public Health Commission. The American Heart Association estimates that chances of survival are doubled and even tripled if immediate care is provided. The body of a child is different than that of a mature adult and requires specialized training for effective CPR performance.

Step 1

Locate a CPR certification class teaching child CPR near you. Two main child CPR certifications are through the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross.

Step 2

Register for a class at a location convenient to you Busy professionals or individuals who are short on time may find online courses linked with an on-site practical exam. This will limit time in the classroom allowing you to learn material on your own before having to pass the practical.

Step 3

Pay for your enrollment in the class. Prices can range from $25 to $75 depending on location and if any community outreach programs are in place.

Step 4

Arrive early for class to ensure your spot in the class is accounted for. Plan to spend at least four hours in the class learning the skills necessary to perform child CPR.

Step 5

Complete the child CPR exam and register for your CPR certification certificate. Your certificate may be given to you on site; however, some certificates may be mailed to your address.

Tips and Warnings

  • CPR techniques change constantly; therefore, you should renew your child CPR certificate every one to two years depending on which agency you have certified through.
  • Certifications should require a hands-on practical for demonstration of your ability to correctly perform CPR. You are encouraged to seek these out for optimal learning experience.
