Side Effects & Risks Associated With Sulfameth Trimethoprim

Sulfameth and trimethoprim are two different generic drugs that are usually referred to as co-trimoxazole. According to Drug Watch, one of its most popular brand names is Bactrim, which is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as ear infections, urinary tract infections, chronic bronchitis and intestinal infections. This drug can come in oral or intravenous form, depending on the prescription of the physician. Like all other drugs out in the market, the combination of sulfameth and trimethoprim can have a variety of side effects.

Mild Side Effects

According to Drug Watch, some of the mild side effects associated with sulfameth trimethoprim include body weakness, fatigue and insomnia, or difficulty sleeping. The person may also experience a spinning sensation known as vertigo, accompanied by headaches. Tinnitus or persistent ringing in the ears can also be experienced.

Gastrointestinal Disturbances

According to RxList, gastrointestinal disturbances are the most common side effects of sulfameth trimethoprim. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia or loss of appetite. These side effects are often mild non-life-threatening. However, some people experience worsening of these adverse effects, so they should consult their physician or pharmacist during these instances. In some cases, a patient taking sulfameth trimethoprim may experience an intestinal condition known as pseudomembranous colitis, which is a severe intestinal condition caused by a resistant bacteria.

Allergic Reactions

Some people may experience allergic reactions due to the intake of sulfameth trimethoprim. According to Drugs.com, these allergic reactions can range from mild to severe side effects. It can be as simple as the development of rashes and pruritus or itching, or can be as life-threatening as difficulty of breathing and tightness of the chest. Swelling of the mouth, lips, and throat are also signs of an allergic reaction to sulfameth trimethoprim. A lot of people are allergic to sulfameth, so these allergic reactions may be common in people taking Bactrim and Septra.

Serious Side Effects

Drug Watch reports that although there are possible serious and fatal adverse effects of sulfameth trimethoprim, these are often rare in occurrence. These include the Stevens-Johnsons syndrome, in which the person develops a severe type of peeling skin rash. In some cases, the blood may also be affected. The person may experience bleeding episodes and easy bruising. According to Drugs.com, symptoms to watch out for include skin rashes, swelling, blisters, itching, sore throat, fever, joint pain, yellowish skin, and dark urine. These side effects are indicative of liver damage and require immediate medical attention.
