Learning to shoot well will help any basketball player have more of an impact on the game. There are many factors involved in shooting, including conditioning, athletic ability, hand placement and technique. Improving your shooting is based on mastering the techniques and then practicing them consistently.
Footwork
One of the ways to learn how to shoot properly is by having the proper footwork. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart with your right foot slightly in front of your left foot if you are a right-handed shooter. Your weight should be evenly distributed between your two feet, and you should lean forward slightly as you prepare to jump.
Lift
In order to shoot the ball properly, you need to get up high so your opponent cannot block your shot. This is done by jumping quickly and powerfully. After you have determined that you are going to shoot, gather yourself so you can contract the powerful jumping muscles in your calves. Explode upward and release the ball when you are nearly at the peak of your jump.
Considerations
In order to shoot properly, you have to bring the ball to the proper position prior to releasing it. Get the ball to forehead height as you prepare to shoot. Your fingers of your shooting hand should be spread fully and the ball needs to be balanced on your fingertips. Use your other hand to help secure the ball by holding it on the side.
Function
Aim the ball at a spot just over the front rim of the basket. Release the ball by snapping your wrist forward. This will propel the ball toward the basket with a smooth rotation. Make sure your fingers go all the way forward so you don't pull up on your finish. If you release the ball properly, your middle finger will be pointing directly at the front rim.
Benefits
Once a shooter realizes he is open, he has the opportunity to help his team by shooting the ball quickly and with purpose. If the shooter makes one or two shots early in the game, he will give his team confidence that it has an offensive option that it can depend on. There are many aspects of basketball that are vital when it comes to winning. However, none are more important than shooting. A team that cannot put the ball in the basket consistently cannot win the game.
