Fishing is an activity that many find stress-relieving and enjoyable, but spooling a reel can be a frustrating part of the sport. Adding line to a reel is often necessary for the frequent fisherman or the angler who likes to use a braided line. But taken in proper steps with a bit of focus, adding fishing line to your reel can be quick, simple and less frustrating than you might think.
Adding Line to Your Reel
Step 1
Place the existing line and the line from the spool paralleling each other with the ends overlapping by approximately 1 foot.
Step 2
Grasp the free end of the line from your reel and create a small loop on the end by bending the line about 6 inches from the end.
Step 3
Leave a 1-inch loop and wrap the line around both parallel strands four to eight times, leaving room under each loop.
Step 4
Thread the end through the 1-inch loop.
Step 5
Pull the line and knot tight.
Step 6
Test the strength of the knot with a quick tug.
Step 7
Fix your spool of new line, but make sure it can spin freely.
Step 8
Tension the line by lightly grasping it with your fingers and pulling it away from the reel.
Step 9
Reel slowly until your barrel is full of line.
Tips and Warnings
- Some may benefit from a fly-tying magnifying glass, particularly if you use a small-diameter line. If you fish with a braided line, use this knot to attach it to your monofilament line to enhance the effectiveness of your reel. Monofilament line is less visible underwater, so you may use this technique to attach a monofilament leader to your braided line.
Things You'll Need
- Spool of fishing line of desired test strength
- Spool holder, free spinning
