Eggs & Healthy Hair

Wonders

Eggs are a powerful source of protein. They contain important nutrients such as biotin and vitamin B-12 that are especially important for strengthening the hair, according to nutritionists and hair experts. Eggs work wonders for the hair on the inside and outside. When it comes to eggs, you are what you eat and what you put on your hair. Scrambled, fried or shampooed, you can't beat them. Many people use raw eggs as conditioner to turn lackluster hair into lovely locks.

Building Block

Protein, which makes up more than 80 percent of hair, is considered the building block of hair, according to hair-styles-secrets-reveals.com. A University of Illinois review of more than 25 studies of eggs found that eggs are an excellent source of protein, it was reported in the January/February issue of the journal Nutrition Today. Dr. Donald K. Layman, who led the study, said people should focus on consuming sources of higher-quality protein. One egg supplies more than 6g of high-quality protein, and eggs are inexpensive. Instead of a homemade mixture, you can just add an egg to your regular shampoo, according to the Healthy Teaching Web site. The protein instantly strengthens and protects the hair, giving it extra body and texture. It's recommended you keep the egg-and-shampoo mixture in the refrigerator.

Hair Loss

Nutrition and vitamins are important for healthy hair, says hair stylist Kristen Lock, creator of the Urban Hair Instructional DVD series. Eggs contain vitamin A, an antioxidant needed to produce healthy sebum in the scalp. Sebum oils dry hair and prevents dandruff. Vitamin B12 and B5 in eggs helps prevent hair loss. Biotin helps produce keratin and may prevent graying. Eggs are also packed with sulfur, a main element in hair's structure. Eggs contain fatty acids to help make hair shiny and manageable. Egg yolks mixed with olive or castor oil have been a popular homemade egg conditioner for years, providing strong and silky hair. The Hair Centre, a hair loss and scalp treatment center in London, notes that foods rich in certain vitamins and nutrients improve your general diet and the health of your hair. Among the foods the center's experts recommend are eggs, because they contain vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamins B1, B5, B6 and B12, folic acid and biotin.
