Finding out the sex of the unborn baby is an exciting time for new parents. According to the American Pregnancy Association, ultrasounds can often determine the gender of the baby between 18 and 20 weeks gestation. Ultrasounds are not 100 percent accurate in determining gender, as it depends on the skill of the ultrasound technician, as well as position of the baby in the uterus.
Step 1
Set an appointment for an ultrasound when you are between 18 and 20 weeks pregnant. Your ultrasound may be 2D, 3D, 4D or a combination of all of them. During this visit, your baby may also be examined for general health, well-being and the presence of any abnormalities or birth defects.
Step 2
Drink eight glasses of water per day for several days prior to your ultrasound. Proper hydration ensures that the amniotic fluid levels are high to allow for plenty of room for the baby to move around. It also helps to drink a glass of orange juice or eat something with sugar 30 minutes prior to the appointment to encourage the baby to move.
Step 3
Watch the ultrasound screen as the technician performs the ultrasound. If the baby is a girl, you will be able to see three lines outlining the labia when the technician locates the genitals on the ultrasound. The three lines are very pronounced and will become even more defined later in pregnancy.
Step 4
Check the monitor for the presence of a penis and scrotum indicating that the baby is a boy. During an ultrasound, it is important to remember that the absence of a penis is not an indication that the baby is a girl. If necessary, the ultrasound should be repeated at a later date when the baby is in a better position.
