Drinking oolong and green tea can help you lose weight and prevent obesity, as well as lower your risk for cancer and other chronic illnesses. According to The University of Maryland Medical Center, clinical studies suggest that green tea extract may boost metabolism and help burn fat, possibly due to the naturally occurring catechins in the tea. A study performed at the Ehime University School of Medicine found that oolong tea also had anti-obesity effects, possibly due to the caffeine in the tea, and could potentially be used as a treatment for obesity and fatty liver caused by a high-fat diet.

Step 1

Buy the type of tea that works for you. Both oolong and green tea naturally contain caffeine, but caffeine-free varieties are available, and still contain the catechins thought to contribute to weight loss.

Step 2

Brew tea according to the instructions on the package. Be sure to let the leaves soak, or "steep," long enough, and use water that is hot but not boiling.

Step 3

Drink the tea every day. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests adults drink two to three cups of green tea per day. Meet your quota by replacing your morning coffee or afternoon soda with a cup of hot tea, or make a pitcher of iced tea by steeping extra strong hot tea and pouring it over a pitcher full of ice. Keep the iced tea in your fridge for three to five days, and pour yourself a glass every few hours.

Step 4

Adjust the flavor of the tea if you get tired of drinking the same beverage every day. Add a slice of lemon or orange to brewed tea, or brew tea with a sprig of fresh mint for a refreshing flavor.

Tips and Warnings

  • Be mindful of your caffeine intake. Green and oolong teas have relatively low caffeine content, but you should still be aware that you are consuming caffeine and avoid drinking too much, or drinking tea before trying to sleep. Include tea as a part of your complete diet and exercise plan; do not rely on tea alone for weight loss or overall health.
  • Do not use tea as a weight loss tool for children.
