According to MayoClinic.com, a 160-pound individual who swims laps in a typical 25-yard or 25-meter pool will burn 511 calories an hour, a 200-pound individual will burn 637 calories, and a 240-pound individual will burn 763 calories.

If swimming laps doesn't suit you, water aerobics can be an alternative. The MayoClinic.com website estimates that a 160-pound individual burns 292 calories over the course of an hour, a 200-pound individual burns 364 calories, and a 240-pound individual burns 436 calories.

Alternative Activities

Fitness Magazine online investigated the calories burned for an average-weight woman who participates in nontraditional physical activities. All calorie estimates were based on a 155-pound woman. The magazine found that an hour of scuba diving burned 490 calories. Hopscotch and tetherball resulted in burning 350 calories per hour. Bellydancing burned 315 calories in an hour. Rollerblading burned 840 calories over the course of an hour.
